Baby It’s Cold Outside…

Yep, that would be Paul and Harrison rotating tires in the snow. It did need to get done before I drove from Blowing Rock to Southport the next day but still…A+ for getting it done in arctic conditions!

Roughing it up in the Blowing Rock Snow

Grandma came to visit this past weekend bringing a late Christmas Present…A super burley, modified Gator with studs in the tires so that it can go up the driveway in the snow. Look out world, Harrison’s driving!

How much do we love Pinterest???

Pinterest is definitely a two way street. Equal parts time waster and awesome housewife tool.
Here’s one that I actually use for all sorts of things: jewelry, scarves, sun glasses, tools (with a hole in the handle). Super cheap fix for a lot of odds and ends that need organizing.
Check out my High Country Housewife board for more time, money and space saving tips.

Christmas in Blowing Rock

Even with Winter starting late and no snow yet to speak of, Blowing Rock is still a pretty magical place during the holidays.
From the Christmas in the Park festival to various parades, craft fairs featuring local artisans, the Chetola Festival of Lights and lets not forget Skiing, Snowboarding and Ice Skating.

Here are a few pictures from around town.
Happy Holidays!

Memory Jar

The busy season is winding down here in the beautiful Blue Ridge High Country of North Carolina. With a full behind me it’s time to shape up, catch up, savor and get ready for the next year.
My crafty/nostalgic side gets to come out during winter. I finally had time to implement an awesome idea that I found on recently…the memory jar.
You make a jar of memories and milestones for each year (this one is small since it’s almost 2012) and then sit down and read them as a family on new years.
What a wonderful way to remember and start fresh! When you grow up you realize that traditions don’t make themselves, you have to shape what you remember and carry on.

Every little boy’s dream!

Definitely can’t say I love all of the construction going on near our house or the 321 corridor of Boone, Blowing Rock area in general but it’s a dream come true for my almost 3 year old.

Tons of big equipment in action to watch!!!

Angry Momma Turkey and Wounded Baby Bird

I really should just turn this into a NC Mountain wildlife blog…

So this morning I hear a ruckus outside and see a big old turkey beside my porch (never seen one anywhere near my house before). Floyd the dog was just sitting on the porch watching it. Anyway, it flew into a nearby tree but seemed pretty upset.

Jump to 10 minutes later when Floyd runs out from the woods and drops what looks like a dead baby chicken at my feet. I was about to put it in a trash bag and take it to the dump when I felt it and it was still warm. I picked the little guy up and it opened it’s eyes a little bit so then I went into Mom mode. I hit Google for information, grabbed a box, some warm towels and a hot water bottle, tried to give it some water and kept it in the dark to keep it calm.

At this point I was thinking it was a baby Hawk because of the long beak and huge talons so I sent out a Facebook cry for help to see where the nearest Wildlife Rescue Place was. Thanks Facebook friends and Blowing Rock, NC fans for all of the great advice and support!

It was only after I talked to the people 3 times about how to save a carnivorous bird that my Mom emailed me saying “It’s a turkey!!!” So…Thankfully the Blue Ridge Wildlife Rescue facility on Lees McRae Campus in Banner Elk will take in a wounded turkey. They even have another little turkey for him to be friends with but I’m still sad for his Momma. Hopefully we’ll Linkget him there safe and sound for a full recovery…Ahhh life in the country.

Building a High Country Clubhouse out of Pallets

As if in the NC Mountains wasn’t enough, My husband decided to use some extras and make a little club house for our 2 year old (and himself).
Took about 10 dollars some donated pallets from the nice folks at Village Hardware in Blowing Rock and 2 hours of labor to complete but the hours of entertainment and extra porch space are priceless!
We don’t have much of a yard so making un-usable space useable is a great idea (of which I can take no credit for…or the execution for that matter)

Trillium - Found a patch of these down by the club house too for an added bonus!!!
